Hi all
I have been looking for grouse in se michigan for the last two years. I have only flushed two in a few dozen scouting trips. I have plenty of spots to hunt up north but I can only get there on the weekends. Just wodering if anyone has had any success here. I am not asking for spots just guidance on if I am wasting my time searching for something that doesn't exist. Pickles (my brittany) and I thank you ahead of time for the info. Pms are welcome as well

It has been a long summer. New responsibilities at work and a baby boy in the way in October, our first, along with getting the house ready has eaten up most of the summer.

But the "Honey-do" list is complete and I have gotten the dogs out a few times in preparation for the season.

Miss Gretchen is leading the pack going into the season and today I watched her "swap ends" and stick a grouse while running full bore.

I sincerely hope that moves you as it does me. I pray to God there never comes a day when that doesn't get me as excited as the first time I ever saw a dog do that.

It is an interesting, albeit sad year to watch Panzer run like lighting while his older brother (Gunner) has lost a step and his daddy (Baron) wobbles to stay standing when he is done running.

There is a sad reality that smacks you in the face, no matter how hard you try to avoid it, that dogs get old. But what they lack in speed and agility, they overcome with wisdom and memories that no-one can ever replace or steal from either them, or you.

And I wont take it from Baron either. I won't hunt him til he drops as he will let me know when it is "time." But I won't take away what he lives for by leaving him in a kennel. If he only hunts for 15 minutes, then so be it...he earned it.

But it won't be long and I will walk up on a dog, just a 5 month old pup last year, frozen in time, eyes bulging, body trembling, internal embers stoked by a genetic fire from decades of breeding...I will pause and find the most silence the world has to offer. At that point...the dog, bird, and I will be complete.

I will remember that moment for the rest of my life and probably be able to walk to that very spot in the woods, without a GPS, the rest of my life. Just as I can with the spots where it occurred for dogs past and present.

From one grouse hunter to others...I'll raise a toast to the coming season. May it be safe and the best one you have ever had.

Dennis

What a great experience. Great facility kept incredibly clean by two of nicest, most knowledgeable, and honest guys you'll ever meet. Ran at least 16 dogs of different ages on birds and was impressed by all of them. If everybody played the game the way Scott and Ben do the dog world would be a better place. If you're thinking setters red or english you should call these guys. mac mcd

In case anyone else buys one of these.....when you're messing around with it at home and setting the beeper up please be aware......

As my wife most certainly is now........

When activating/using the beeper/setting the dip switches, the "receiver" portion of the collar (the "shocker") must be ON and in close proximity to the beeper to work (obvious when it's on the dog, but not quite so when on the kitchen table). Otherwise, you cannot use the remote to turn the beeper remotely on/off.

The instructions are slightly ambiguous, but a quick phone call to Tri-Tronics (an American company based in Tuscon, AZ) and they got me straightened away. Supposedly the next generation instructions will make this case more clear.

So, which one of you will be forgoing a romp in the grouse woods on Oct 5 so that you can pick up "the most beautiful gun ever seen?" If only I had an extra million laying around that I didn't know what to do with....

For Sale: Teddy Roosevelt’s Shotgun
Leave it to Teddy Roosevelt to rough it in style. Before departing for Cuba in 1898 to lead the Rough Riders, he had his Lieutenant Colonel’s uniform tailored by Brooks Brothers. (He also owned a pearl-handled revolver from Tiffany’s.) And for his legendary year-long safari in Africa years later, the avid sportsman brought along some of the finest guns that could be made. One of those was an A. H. Fox 12-gauge side-by-side, which even Roosevelt thought might be a little too fine to carry into the bush. “It is the most beautiful gun I have ever seen…I am almost ashamed to take it to Africa and expose it to the rough usage it will receive,” he wrote to Ansley Fox. “But now that I have it, I could not possibly make up my mind to leave it behind.”

The shotgun, like Roosevelt, made it back safely, and then it joined T. R. on his famed “River of Doubt” expedition in the Amazon before eventually winding up in the hands of a private collector. Now, one lucky bidder will give it a new home. On October 5, the Fox goes up for auction by James D. Julia Auctioneers, accompanied by several other goodies, including the outboard motor wrench Roosevelt used on his Amazon expedition and cleaning rags cut from the president’s pajamas (click here to see a gallery). But if you’re thinking about bidding, bring your piggy bank. The auction house conservatively estimates the gun will sell for $750,000 to $1 million. At that price, probably best not to bring it on safari.
